In addition to clenching (especially on a new filling that is 'high'),
poor etching and bonding technique with the 'new' filling can leave you
with a very uncomfortable tooth.

There could also be a crack in the tooth that was not seen during the
filling process (or a new one developed about that same time).

What to do?

Adjust the bite and make an NTI. If no improvement,

Remove filling and replace using Clearfil SE Bond (look for cracks
during the process). If no improvement,

Probable root canal.

Clenching [which is severe enough] can indeed cause elevated sensitivity in
a tooth or group of teeth. It can also (more rarely) create toothache type
symptoms.

It sounds as if the nerve may be dying. It may not show up
immediately on the xray, but you should see a root canal
specialist(endodontist) for sure. Waiting may cause you to wake up in
pain one night, and it is not a pain you would want. Your symptoms
are not indicative of TMJ. Good luck.

Default Tooth pain in #19, but x-ray is negative

Almost 9 months ago now, I had a filling replaced in #19. Since then,
it was sensitive to hot & cold, and would occasionally throb on its
own. However, I couldn't see my dentist until yesterday, as my
insurance had run out at that point. I've been grinning and bearing it
since then

So yesterday, he xrays & examines it, and is left scratching his head.
The xray is negative, and the filling that's there isn't even that
deep. You can see that there is quite a bit of structure between it
and the nerve chamber.

So I appear to have phantom tooth pain. Is this still possibly a tooth
going south, even after 9 months, or should we be looking for other
sources? TMJ Possibly?
