I unfortunately developed the habit of mimicing our instructors and
professors. Once or twice it got me in trouble.
We had a German-speaking microbiology professor, Harald Linke. He
spoke to us of "rhyzobia, siss ferry keeeoooot michroooooorganeesm, see
nitchrogen-feexingk backteeria, sis ferry, ferry keeooot. We had a
pharmacology instructor, a very nice Dutchman, a physician named Norbert
Overweg. He would repeat things over and over to make sure we got it.
Unfortunately, we were no more likely to get it on the tenth
repetition...Ze biss hydchoxy coomaddin, siss Varfereen, siss Varveree,
siss biss hydchoxy coomaddin...
Wait a minute--that's about all I remember from pharmo. Maybe he
wasn't so bad after all.

Of course the books contain the only true knowledge and are never out of

Since it's been 25 years and no instructors that I had are still
teaching (and many aren't even alive)...

Our biochem instructor sounded like Foster Brooks and our pathology
instructor had such an Asian accent that he was almost impossible to
understand ("ensparrred allwheeolar are"...Dan can translate to
English). The occlusion instructor had no clue. Endo wasn't much
better. Crown & bridge, operative, and oral surgery were generally
quite good. Psychological Aspects of Dentistry.....now that was some course!

Education is a problem all over the US. My pet theory is that the
Xerox machine is the culprit! Every instructor makes up their own
syllabus instead of following the clearly-defined book!

I last had it about 8-10 years ago. (20 years post DS).

I think the trick to dental school is to find out very early which
instructors are the biggest PITA. Talk to them and find out exactly what
they want to see in your work. Always give them what they want to see. The
other instructors will be a breeze.

It was actually the late, great Georgetown University...but this just goes to
show that there are many similarities between all schools!

Was the term "super senior" used where you went to Dental School? For us that
meant someone who had not finished their requirements by graduation and had to
stay into a 5th year. If you just finished your endo, that would make you a
really, super senior.

Know that dream, but mine was about the state board.

I look back at the requirements now and think...

Did not mean to make that suggestion for you or for myself...I am happy I did
it, but once was most definitely enough! When I was a student we had a given #
of required procedures. I think it was 40 units of crown and Bridge, 10 arches
removable, etc...for years after dental school I would have dreams full of panic
that graduation was nearing and I wasn't getting my requirements completed.
